vuvuzelas - adventures of a red-headed stepchild in the house of love
mermaid on the mic
so apparently lots of people are ALL bent out of shape around these stupid plastic horns at the world cup.

once I checked into this there was nothing I could do but laugh, recognizing them from my time back in the '90s living at 24th and Capp in good ol' SF! (they have them at EVERY parade and street fair, and there are a LOT of parades and street fairs in the Mish, and they all went right past my place.)

yes, we hated them, with a hate that burned pure as only the noise-assaulted hungover brain can hate.

then, in 1998, we moved to the Haight and pretty much forgot all about 'em. (I could also go out of the house in sweat pants without provoking public comment, but that is another post altogether.)

now the vuvuzelas are in the news (I never learned the name BITD) and all I can do is laugh and remember so many sun drenched weekend afternoons gone by in my sweet old place in the Mish...

so, what can I say, but:

Viva Vuvuzuela!

Yeah. I have the same memories. Every Cinco de Mayo on the Mission and a few other street festivals incited use of these trumpets, but they were not called that. They were annoying whether one person was using it or 5.

However, as far as the world cup...they are beyond annoying me simply because they are being belted out in large quantities (tens of thousands of people that are in the stands). When I get ahold of the broadcasts that have not muffled the sound from the crowd of the vuvuzelas, it gets to my ears overall and I just cant stand it.

Well, Americans have been irritating people in far more countries for far longer. I think it's our just desserts.

I kind of feel the same way about certain horrific 80's songs. At the time, they were an irritation, now they are coffee with friends and the view of the Russian Orthodox onion domes and laughing for hours.

this is VERY true of retro music! Jovino dropped Jump (by Van Halen) into the middle of his '80s set at Pink Saturday and it was one of those gutsy DJ moves that would have cleared the floor BITD, but since we haven't been subjected to it over and over and over on the radio (in a few years) now it's funny and cute and after a brief moment of WTF (it was almost like everyone paused) they all went mad for it, jumping on all the choruses.

I remember having one of these for the fair parade in Southern California when I was a kid. The vendor carts piled with random crap used to sell them. Too funny!

I was in the Mission last weekend and a dude was walking up the street blowing one and my friend kept saying it wasn't one, just looked EXACTLY the same but they made a different noise. Uh yeah, 10,000 of them make a different noise. This is what just one sounds like. They are not new.

For starters, come to Forbidden Island on Friday! It's Will's birthday. We'll be there at 7ish I think. Then we'll make a real hang out plan!
