sewwious goggles

rain, cats, life, etc...

I suppose it's wrong of me to not be enthusiastic about the rain when we've gotten so little of it this winter. it is lovely for sleeping, if suboptimal for driving.

my fabulous kittens are growing bigger all the time, and I thoroughly adore them... most of the time. right now I am working with them on things like "no biting hands" "no clawing people" and "waking me up means you get evicted from the bedroom, NOT an early breakfast".

meanwhile, Jovino and the housemate are working on spoiling the hell out of them, busting out the treats for no reason (I like to give them when they have been good, have done something new, or have endured something like ear cleaning, not to reward them for fiending.) the result of all this is that I am the one to spend half my time with them gently but repeatedly lifting them down from the table, disengaging their claws (well, mostly Bruce's claws) from my hand or leg, etc, etc - in general acting the parent.

the housemate gave them salmon she was eating the other day (without checking with me first about whether it was ok to give them scraps) and now Bruce is an absolute terror whenever I try to eat something. everything they do now teaches them something and I am trying to instill good habits so they will be pleasant to live with in the long run, while everyone else is like OOOOOOH KITTIES!!!!!

it's just a whole different way of thinking about interacting with them. to be fair, Jovino has been working to get them to understand "only jump up when you are inviited" (and they are coming along with that one) but he's far more indulgent than I am, and the housemate is just, well, clueless. hopefully she'll at least remember not to let them eat string! I'm sure she can't afford emergency cat surgery so let's hope she remembers that one. the other stuff I will just have to patiently train them out of, but it's disheartening to work and work only to watch someone do something that reinforces the wrong behaviour, sending the work I have done down the drain and lengthening the amount of time I will need to spend working on creating good habits with them.

ah well. they are still great cats. they already know "don't walk on the computron" and most of the time they know better than to jump up on the table. Bruce will calm down eventually... she's very sweetly purring on my lap right now, with her sister. soon, it will be difficult to fit them both!

overall, life is good. I am in LOVE with an amazing man, our business is thriving after only a year and we have great ideas for the future. which reminds me, I better go pack up those packages and get to the post office before it starts raining again!

more kitty pix later!
