No Sleep 'til PLAYA!
...or so it seems.

I'm trying to keep up my energy and stay positive, but this is just fucking gruelling.  it's like when you are on a long road trip and you drive and drive and still you're not there.  it helps that the order cut-off has (finally) come - at least there is an end in sight.  I just hope we can get through all this stuff soon, and maybe still have a bit of time for our own projects (cat shrine, tent repair, food/bar stock, hair, packing...) forget any new schmattes for us, probably.  oh well.  I've just got to quit letting people buy my own things off my back at these sales!  (they're just so pleadingly insistent...)

I know we'll get through it.  we're just getting ground down from the relentlessness.

hopefully it'll all serve to make that first playa sunrise champagne all the sweeter... gotta keep my eyes on that.

I'm feeling: tired tyord
I'm hearing: Time after Time (theory robocast)

*wishing I could sew*

I can help with packing, getting orders ready, and other stuff.

totally understand if it would be more work to explain what needs to get done making my help kind of useless.

but...you know how to get in touch if'n it works out you could use a hand :-)

next year

Can you get someone to come and help packing and shipping and shlepping? Do you have the kind of shipping account where someone comes to you to pick up your packages?

After Burning Man, you guys can figure out what went right and what needed work for next year. Your business is growing so fast that next year you'll most likely want to have an assistant at least seasonally.

Working so hard is really exhausting, but at least it's your own business.

Re: next year

ZOMG, hi!!!! I had no idea you had an account here. I have added you to my friend groups so you can see filtered posts, yay. ;-)

Thanks for the kind words. We've had some help this year... I offloaded most of the hand-sewing (finishing kitty ears - my least favorite task) and have had friends come in and do cutting while I did administrative stuff. That worked pretty well - though one got sick with the Flu From Hell and the other is now too busy with school and another (presumably better paying) PT job so it's pretty much back to Just Us for this last stretch. I know I should consider getting someone in to pack orders, but that's a tough thing for me to let go of, and I've been trying to figure out why. Maybe it's that I am the one who has to respond to the emails about "where is my package and when was it sent?" and I have a need to know what is going on there (and to remember sending the actual package.) I have thought about this while packing up stuff as a friend has done cutting, and that's the best rationale I can come up with. ;-)

By next year we should have managed to outsource a good chunk of production so that we don't have to personally make every single thing we sell as we are now.

We do currently run packages to the PO ourselves - you have to schedule pickup by midnight the night before and they want to know the # of packages, and we often work later than that. But, it does serve to get us out of the house at least!

We have a ton of ideas for streamlining things next year, and we're hopeful that next year we'll be much more prepared for this rush. We are definitely more busy than we were last year at this time - and - back then Jovino had an outside job and we couldn't work FT for ourselves - I think this year's bman rush is at least 3 times bigger than a year ago, so that is clearly on the awesome side.

BTW do you have comments here emailed to you? If not, Jovino can tell you how to set that up - it's one of my favorite features of LJ!

Re: next year

as I can often be heard mumbling this time of year "there will be plenty of time to sleep while I'm at burning man....."

I'm glad it's all going so well for you.

you guys should compare notes with my friend from Cool Neon (post event of course) regarding shipping etc. They used to send all their stuff USPS, but have now switched a majority of stuff over to FedEx....don't know if they managed to get the daily pickups going again, but I know they were working on it.

see ya on the playa!!!

Re: next year

can you make up a quick list for your helper to fill out with which package was sent when and all the other pertinent info? carbon copies of shipping forms, maybe?

That is so awesome that you're completely swamped!!! I mean, yeah, you're tired and it's a sleepless grind, but YAY BUNNYWAREZ! You're doing well! Everyone loves you and wants to buy your stuff! So much better than the alternative.

Your playa vacation will be totally worth it. :-)

Alas, that is the nature of the costume business, particularly one built around annual events. My ex- used to have the crazy manufacturing blitz before Pennsic war every year; when he switched to selling at Renaissance faires he had to force himself to schedule production more regularly, because no blitz could get him stock to make it through the run.
