another bone-headed LJ policy change comes down
Edit: looks like this change will *not* be going through as per LJ staff. thanks to all who responded!

I wanted to make sure people saw this while it may still be possible for the decision to be changed.

they're going to take away the option for "unspecified gender" in new account signups.

I don't like it. it's discriminatory, unnecessary, and it leaves out people with a non-binary gender or gender identification! not to mention that it is none of their business.

existing accounts can still set "(unspecified)" at present but I'd imagine they will eventually decide to force a choice. while it is still possible to do so, I would encourage you to set your profile to "(unspecified)" (if it is not already) as a show of support and to poke holes in their stupid ad demographic data. tell your friends!

I also posted a comment over in the change announcement post and am encouraging anyone with a setting other than "(unspecified)" to change to that. let's get this fixed before people start leaving over it.

here's the post:

Thank you for notifying me of this - I weighed in with a comment as well.

Facebook annoys me for that very reason!

Mine was on female (I like being a girl these days) but I'll change it for solidarity :)

How do I change it?

I read about this last night. LJ have backpedalled like crazy but in a very condescending way that leads me to believe they're gonna quietly roll this out at some point anyway. And calling Denise a lying liar who lies? That's just really fucking low. (EDIT: low of LJ, clearly, not of you or anyone else. Denise = synecdochic on Dreamwidth. Wrote this pre-coffee this morning, apologies for any miscommunications.)

This is it for me. I'm letting my paid LJ account expire. I'm doing most of my posting at Dreamwidth anyway these days. (I has teh many invite codes, if you want one...)

From LJ, via erynn999:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. We understand that gender is not binary, and intend to respect that understanding for our users.

At this time, the code you reference is not live on the site, and will not become so in the future. We know that you, and many other users, have serious concerns about any requirement to specify gender, so we'd like to take a moment to explain events and our position further.

The intention of this code was to change the sign-up process to include a field for the selection of gender; that the code would completely disable the "Unspecified" option at the same time was deemed unacceptable. While the code in question had gone to our beta (testing) server, it had not gone to our production server, and will not do so due to this problem. Furthermore, we'd like to clarify that code posted to the changelog community is not always final, as such code must then go through the beta testing process and can often be changed before actual implementation.

Additionally, some erroneous information has been spread regarding the potential public display of the gender field. We would like to clarify that gender is not currently publicly displayed on the profile, nor anywhere else on the site, and there are no plans to change this behavior.
