Exactly who I'm s'posed to be... I don't know which clothes even fit me
So, I am taking this career planning course at Laney Community College to work out my next direction in life.

We've been taking personality assessments and looking at career databases and websites. And I am just as uncertain as the day I first walked into the class.

Part of it is that I'm a complicated person: I'm social, but relatively introverted (which is why working with online community suited me well, back in the day). I'm creative, but not enough of an entrepreneur to get ongoing work doing creative stuff (and I won't have anything to do with advertising or marketing - my brief foray into marketing work showed me that it really isn't for me.) Etc.

About the most appealing thing I've come up with so far is Library Science. (And I'd welcome comments or emails from those of you who are in this field... I know there are at least two of you out there who have me friended, so feel free to pipe up and offer your perspectives!) Or doing hair... I'm currently fascinated by hair, especially fake hair/extensions. The thing with that is that #1 I have old RSI in my wrists, so it might not be feasible for me, and #2 you have to work weekends to make any money.

So... if you have a job/career you enjoy, how did you find it?

I'm feeling: thoughtful This indecision's bugging me

Hmm. I'm in graduate school, which one would think would be evidence of "a career I enjoy" (or at least am interested in). I guess I am, though it's hard to maintain that interest while working my ass off on stupid problem sets.

How'd I find it? It just kind of jumped out at me. I wish I could give you advice about people to talk to, ways to investigate your options.. but for me, it just kind of occurred to me one day "Hmm, I'd like to be a geotechnical engineer! Yeah, that sounds like it would work really well for me!"

Outside of school, in life-in-general type stuff, I feel very similar - confused, don't know where I'm going. If you come up with any ways to figure it out, let me know :P

I'm actually not currently in the exact field I'd like to be in right now. I'm working for a nonprofit, which is great, but I'd rather be working with women or in some kind of social work area.

The way I got to figure out what I wanted to do was kind of by surprise. I was mostly interested in Anthropology when I started college, and so I spent 4 months in India. The status of women (well, and social problems in general) really tugged at my heart and I started right then and there to throw myself into social activism.

I got back to school and began working at the Women's Center, by the next year I was actually running the place and organizing the campus events, such as Rape Awareness Week and Women's History Month. I also became co-president of the GLBSU club (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Student Union) and did some activism on that front as well.

One month before I graduated I was offered a job as an administrator at a local battered women's shelter. Although the place was rife with problems and funding crisis (I didn't get a paycheck for 2 months b/c of lack of funds), I knew that it was what I wanted to do.

As for library science, I of course have a soft spot in my heart for the Library. My dad has a M.A. in Library Science and has worked in the SFPL system his entire career, literally. And the S.F. Library system is an amazingly open place to be able to work too. They'd have no problem with your hair or sexuality, or any of that.

If you'd like, I can actually set up a few meetings with other librarians here that I know and you can talk to them about what they do and what they like, etc. Let me know! :)
