This makes me happy.

Seeing the supposed counterculture picking on those who are obviously fellow-travellers makes me sad. Can't we all just get along?!

I hope that ROFLCon is a joke because I certainly don't want to see Goatse in person!

I don't want to see Goatse in person either!

LOL, SRSLY!!!

Actually I'm surprised that you're freaked out by goatse! I thought you were a brave (and kinky!) bear!

Yup. I have been fchanned myself with my Krystal cosplay (seen in icon) and people are quick to judge on forums like that (consider the source. Haha!) . People say that it takes courage to dress up in some of the wild costumes that I have and/or like what Tron-guy does (I know him personally and I love his style). I dont know if "bravery" is the right word but it does take somethign to be able to put up with the peanut gallery.

i pity the fool who makes fun of the tron man. that is such an awesome costume!

SRSLY. There was a thread in the Sexy Dorks tribe that someone started about Tron Guy, which was clearly mocking. I told them that if they couldn't be respectful of their fellow Sexy Dorks that they had no place in the group.

Nice to hear from you! :-*

I'm confused, and I don't see links to backstory? Something to do with someone mocking the Tron guy?

It was the Tron guy's site that led Erich to get his silver jumpsuit; Tron guy's links to Renaissance Dancewear helped us find them and decide to order from them.

Silver jumpsuit? Tell me more, I'm curious.

He doesn't have the hood up in this picture, but it has a hood that goes up and covers his head.

The jumpsuit is from Renaissance Dancewear; those guys are really awesome and their office is right on E's way home from work. We were talking, and Erich was all "man, I want some silver shorts, but they all look lame.." and I was all "why get shorts, they'll look awful, go all the way and get a silver spaceman jumpsuit!" and then he was all "hey, look, this is where Tron Guy gets his stuff, I bet they could make it" and then I called them on the phone and they were all "oh, sure, we can send you a couple swatches" and the swatches arrived in one day and they were perfect so I measured him up and called them and placed the order and they were TOTALLY AWESOME.

*whew* And that's the story.

Yeah, I wanna see the costume! Yay for creative costuming - and especially for guys (and those of us who aren't conventional beauties) who have the guts to do it anyway!

FREAKS FTW!!!!

I stumbleupon'ed the 56 Geeks last night, and my immediate reaction was:

"Cool, I wonder how many of those geeks I am or have been?" (Answer: 8. Bargain Bin, Comics, Food, Film, Book, Drama, Collectible, and TV.)

Then I walked through the whole list, mentally assigned names of people I knew to each kind. And yes, I have 2 friends who made truly dazzling ELwire Tron suits.

Then I thought, "Wow, all of these people have passions, and then go DIY with them. That rocks."

Then I thought, "Dagnabbit, I don't care if I *am* a 35-year old little girl, I'm going to put my action figures back on display". And then I proceeded to recreate my "Wall of Inspiration", happily thumbtacking my
collection of action heroines and villanesses in their original packaging outside my bedroom door.

I feel sad for the folks who see the poster as a dis, even if the artist was one of them (tho I don't think he was). They are soooooo missing out!

For some reason, various parts of the counterculture seem to have to prove they're "normal" by picking on/dissing on other parts.

djmermaid From: djmermaid Date: December 8th, 2007 07:52 am (UTC) (Link)
My point exactly. It's unfortunate, because you'd think that from having been on the other side of the coin, that they would have som compassion - seems to me sometimes that they are even more vicious and bitter though.

:-(
From: silussa Date: December 12th, 2007 11:20 pm (UTC) (Link)
Unfortunately, I have to agree. :(
jmaynard From: jmaynard Date: December 8th, 2007 03:52 am (UTC) (Link)
There was certainly a lot of that when the story first broke, but there's really not a lot of it any more. The folks who were going to make fun of it, and me, have long since gotten it out of their systems.

Unfortunately, as long as the jocks of the world get away with acting like it, others will learn that that kind of thing is a good way to react to others, and it'll just perpetuate itself. (I suppose I should say that by "jock", I mean the kind of person who hung out with a crowd of like-minded folks in high school making fun of everyone who wasn't big and strng and playing football (or whatever the girl equivalent was); not all folks who do sports are like that, obviously.)
djmermaid From: djmermaid Date: December 8th, 2007 07:50 am (UTC) (Link)
Yeah, that's exactly what I mean by "jocks" too. So, that isn't the focus of ROFL Con? I'd really like to know how they pitched it to you!

Thanks for commenting!
jmaynard From: jmaynard Date: December 8th, 2007 04:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
They pitched it to me as a conference on Internet celebrity and memehood, and wanted me to come talk about my experiences.
djmermaid From: djmermaid Date: December 8th, 2007 09:52 pm (UTC) (Link)
That seems cool... I guess I was reacting to the name ROFL Con - like this was all stuff to be laughed at. If it's not that, it could be a really interesting experience. (Wish it was on the west coast, though!)

Don't know if I'll make it out there but in any case I look forward to hearing about it!

We just had a conversation about this!

The DPW have been making a career of this for YEARS now.

I told you my theory about the enneagram 4's (the hopeless romantic, tortured artist archetype). They are so invested in being different that they can't stand the idea of not standing out when they find themselves in a group where being different is "normal." So they turn into utter assholes to make themselves stand out again.

I really despise people who do that.
